Sentinel-1C: New Radar Satellite Launched into Space

On December 5, 2024, the Sentinel-1C satellite was successfully launched aboard a VEGA-C rocket from French Guiana. Orbiting approximately 700 km above Earth, Sentinel-1C is a pivotal component of Europe’s Copernicus programme, employing advanced radar technology to deliver continuous, all-weather imaging of terrestrial and maritime environments, regardless of daylight or cloud conditions. The UK’s Earth Observation sector significantly contributed to this mission; Airbus Defence and Space in Portsmouth developed the electronics subsystem of the Synthetic Aperture Radar instrument, and Enersys ABSL in Abingdon supplied the satellite’s battery. Once operational, Sentinel-1C will operate in tandem with Sentinel-1A, enhancing data collection for applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster response, and climate change assessment. Additionally, Sentinel-1C is equipped with an Automatic Identification System to bolster maritime surveillance capabilities.
