STEM for BRITAIN: Championing the Next Generation of UK Researchers

The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee plays a central and inspiring role in the annual STEM for BRITAIN competition, a prestigious platform that brings the brightest early-career researchers in science, engineering, and mathematics to the heart of Westminster.

Each year, hundreds of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from across the UK present their cutting-edge work to MPs and Peers, celebrating the strength and diversity of British research. These vibrant poster sessions are more than competitions; they are a dialogue between science and policy, designed to foster greater understanding and collaboration between Parliament and the research community.

A Vision Brought to Life: Eric Wharton’s Legacy

The origins of STEM for BRITAIN can be traced back to Eric Wharton, a passionate advocate for science communication and education. After organising successful local science events, Eric proposed an ambitious idea to his then-MP Robert Jackson: bring young scientists to Parliament to present their work. What began as a bold vision quickly became a resounding success. In its inaugural year, over 350 applicants took part—far surpassing expectations.

Eric’s efforts gave rise to a series of poster receptions in Parliament, co-sponsored by MPs such as Dr Brian Iddon and supported by key organisations including the Royal Academy of Engineering, GlaxoSmithKline, and the Medical Research Council. Over the years, STEM for BRITAIN expanded to include distinct events for engineers, bioscientists, and physicists, with generous prizes recognising excellence in research and communication.

Eric’s dedication to nurturing scientific talent laid the foundations for what is now a cornerstone event in the UK’s science calendar. Today, his legacy continues through the work of his wife, Sue Wharton, who remains actively involved in the competition and its mission to promote young researchers.

“The engine-room of progress in research and R&D… a vital resource, asset and investment for the UK.” – Eric Wharton

A Platform with Purpose

STEM for BRITAIN is not just a showcase. It is:

  • A competition, offering prestigious medals and prizes (some as high as £5,000) for the best posters in each discipline.

  • A parliamentary event, where researchers engage directly with policymakers, helping bridge the gap between academic research and societal needs.

  • A catalyst, often sparking collaborations, insights into public engagement, and deeper awareness of how Parliament handles scientific issues.

Whether it’s research into offshore engineering, Alzheimer’s disease, or the societal impacts of pre-eclampsia, STEM for BRITAIN gives emerging scientists a national stage and a unique opportunity to explain the real-world value of their work.

Organised by the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee

The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, as one of the oldest all-party groups in Parliament, provides the essential framework for STEM for BRITAIN. The Committee’s mission to foster dialogue between Parliament and the science and technology community finds its perfect expression in this annual event. It connects MPs with the researchers shaping tomorrow’s world and helps inform policy with fresh evidence and innovation. View the STEM for Britain website here: https://stemforbritain.org.uk/
