University of Strathclyde Principal Announces Retirement

Professor Sir Jim McDonald GBE has announced his retirement as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, effective August 2025, after 16 years in the role. Under his leadership since 2009, the university has experienced significant growth, including a 350% increase in research income to £125 million and a £1 billion campus development. Strathclyde also established two Innovation Districts and maintained top-five UK entry standards while expanding access for students from diverse backgrounds. The university’s achievements have been recognized with multiple awards, including being the only institution named Times Higher UK University of the Year twice. Dame Sue Bruce, Convener of the University Court, praised Sir Jim’s transformative impact on Strathclyde’s academic strength and reputation.

Key Points for Policymakers:

  • Leadership Transition: The upcoming change in leadership presents an opportunity to build upon the university’s recent successes and strategic direction.
  • Innovation and Growth: Continued support for initiatives like the Innovation Districts can further enhance the university’s contributions to research and the economy.
  • Access and Inclusion: Maintaining and expanding efforts to increase student diversity and access to higher education should remain a priority.
